Freelance Illustrators, Designers, and Photographers
Yes, we do work with freelancers. If you would like to be considered for freelance work, please read our portfolio submission guidelines, below.
Illustrators: We commission both color artwork and black-and-white line illustrations for children’s books, as well as cooking, gift, and health books.
Designers: Experience with the design and production of books or publications is essential to being commissioned for freelance design work. We look for distinctive design styles and outstanding production capabilities
Photographers: Most of the photography we commission is for cookbooks—plated food and ingredients shots, both studio and location photography. In addition, we occasionally need gardening photos and author photos.
To be considered for freelance work, please email your resume and a link to your website or online portfolio to portfolio@tenspeed.com. Or, mail your resume and copies of your work to:

DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL ART, DESIGN EXAMPLES, OR PHOTOGRAPHY, as we cannot be liable for lost or damaged materials. If you wish to have materials returned to you, you must include return packaging and postage. We will make arrangements to view the portfolios of eligible freelancers on a drop-off or mail-return basis.
We keep tear sheets and samples of eligible freelancers on file. You may send in fresh samples to add to your file if you feel you have done work that shows a significant shift in style or media, or that you think is particularly appropriate to the kinds of books we publish.
Due to the volume of submissions we receive, you will not be contacted unless we wish to discuss a project with you. Thank you for your interest.
Freelance Editorial Services
Almost all of our books are copyedited, proofread, and indexed by freelancers. Project management and developmental edits are most often handled in-house, but we occasionally use freelancers for those jobs as well. We have a pretty long list of indexers, keyboarders, and project managers, but we are always on the lookout for great proofreaders and copyeditors, especially those with cookbook experience.
If you are well versed in Chicago Manual of Style (15th) and Merriam-Webster’s (11th) and have worked for trade book publishers in our publishing areas, please email your cover letter and resume to freelance@tenspeed.com or mail to:
